How to Clean an Overwhelmingly Messy Home

One of the most powerful things you can do when you’re selling your home is to clean it. Whether you’re photographing your home for listing images or preparing your property for a showing / open house – a cleaner home increases your chances of creating a space where homebuyers can imagine themselves living in. Let’s not forget to mention how beneficial a clean home can be for improving your clarity, reducing your stress, and simply creating a happier ambiance. That all said and although a no brainer – cleaning a messy home isn’t always easy. In fact, at times, it can be paralyzing. Where do you start? How do you go about it? How are you going to squeeze in all the tasks and chores that await … laundry, dishes, clutter, junk drawers, overstuffed spaces, dust, stains, windows, bathrooms, etc?

I’ve come across many cleaning routines and checklists over the years, however, one of the better ones I’ve viewed is the one by Clean My Space. Melissa Maker, a blogger, author, YouTuber, and cleaning expert created a three step process where essentially you start at one spot of the room and work your way around – cleaning from top to bottom. If you haven’t seen any of her videos, below is a great one, full of tips.

In short, Melissa’s strategy consists of beginning in a spot in the room and tidying / decluttering, as you work around the room in a clock-wise movement, hour by hour. During the first step you don’t use cleaning products. You have one goal, to toss the trash, relocate items to where they belong, and eliminate all items you no longer need or find valuable.

After you finish tidying and decluttering, pull out your cleaning products (i.e. an all purpose cleaner, a glass cleaner, and microfiber cloths). Then, dust, shine, and disinfect your surfaces – wiping in a serpentine motion (as displayed in the above video), sweeping all debris onto the floor.

Finally, it’s time to tackle the floors. Starting at the furthest / opposite corner of the room, clean your way out of your room as you vacuum, sweep, and/or mop.

There you have it. One of the greatest benefits of this method, particularly if cleaning a messy home can be overwhelming, is that you have a game plan and only have tackle one little spot at a time. No longer do you have to run all around your home, moving one pile of mess to the other. No longer do you have to second guess yourself as to whether you’ve cleaned an area already or not. You no longer have to stand frozen, confused as to where and how to start. Melissa Maker’s three step cleaning strategy is quite invigorating and a wonderful technique to clean your home for listing purposes or for your own benefits.

As always, if you need any help listing or buying a home, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
